Local youths and Korean volunteers participate in the IVD2013 comemoration

Myanmar - Establishment of a volunteers’ forum is proposed at a gathering last weekend to serve as a platform to strengthen volunteerism in Myanmar.  The forum will be the first in Myanmar that facilitates individual volunteers and local and international volunteer organizations to connect, exchange experiences and support their volunteering activities in Myanmar. The proposal to establish was made at the International Volunteer Day (IVD) commemoration organized on 7 December.

United Nations Volunteer (UNV) and UNDP in collaboration with other volunteering organizations operating in Myanmar jointly organized the IVD commemoration for the first time in Myanmar. Co-organizers are Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and World Friends Korea, Australian Volunteers International, and Austraining International.

In Myanmar, International Volunteer Day has been celebrated several times in the past, contributing to an increased recognition of the impact of volunteerism for development of the country. Theme of this year’s International Volunteer Day is ‘Young.Global.Active’ to pay special tribute to the contribution of youth volunteers in global peace and sustainable human development.

UNDP deploys UN Volunteers throughout Myanmar to support implementation of its country programme in the country. While executing their development activities in support of people of Myanmar these UN volunteers will also help strengthen volunteering spirit together with the communities they serve in the country, said Ms. Thuy Hang Thi To, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Myanmar. “UNDP support the government of Myanmar in accelerating the country’s reform process while promoting volunteerism for peace and development in the country” she said.
