First Visit of Mr. Haoliang Xu, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director UNDP Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific to Myanmar

Mr. Haoliang Xu, UN Assistant Secretary General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director Regional Bureau Asia and the Pacific

Yangon - The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Haoliang Xu will visit Myanmar from September 6 – 12. This will be Mr Xu’s first official visit to Myanmar since his appointment in September last year.

During this visit Mr. Xu will be joined by John Ging, the Director of the Coordination and Response Division of the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). 

Together they will have high level meetings with senior government officials in Nay Pyi Taw where they will meet the Vice President His Excellency Dr. Sai Mauk Kham as well as other senior government Ministers.

Mr. Xu and Mr. Ging will also visit Rakhine State where they will meet the Chief Minister Maung Maung Ohn and senior State Government representatives. On Tuesday, September 9, they will visit IDP camps in Sittwe and Pauktaw townships, and on Wednesday, September 10, Mr. Xu will inaugurate a bridge construction and open a food bank in Ye Chan Pyin village in Sittwe.

The visit provides opportunity to discuss key reform priorities with high-level government officials and to advocate for long-term policies, which will strengthen national capacity to promote sustainable development and reduce social and economic inequalities and exclusion. They will also be able to take stock of the ongoing humanitarian and development situation in Rakhine State and review priorities for the UN system.

Mr. Ging and Mr. Xu leave Myanmar on September 12.
