First nation-wide survey will be launched in mid-October to study socioeconomic impact of HIV on people living with HIV in Myanmar. A large-scale study to assess the socioeconomic impact of HIV at the household level has never been conducted in Myanmar as yet. According to a preliminary study of UNDP conducted in 2012 socioeconomic burdens among HIV-affected households is high.

Myanmar and United Nations Development Programme signed a 3-year Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) on 8 April that outlines the development agency’s engagement in the country for 2013 to 2015. The action plan follows the UNDP’s Executive Board decision in January 2013 to approve a normal country programme for Myanmar after 20 years.

With 1,300,000,000 Japanese Yen (USD13.83million) support of the Japanese Government UNDP will begin assistance in strengthening local governance, restoring livelihoods and building confidence among communities in 6 States of Myanmar starting in April. The one-year project ‘Strengthening Local Governance Capacity, Livelihoods and Social Cohesion for Minorities and Vulnerable Groups in Ethnic and Border Areas of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar’ will be implemented in Rakhine, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Shan and Chin States.
