The 8thASEAN-China Forum on Social Development and Poverty Reduction is underway in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital of Myanmar. Themed “Deepening ASEAN- China Regional Cooperation on Poverty Reduction,” the objective of the forum is to examine how a partnership between China and ASEAN countries can help enhance poverty reduction and inclusive development throughout the region.

“Poverty eradication and the achievement of the United Nations’ Millenium Development Goals are the shared concern of China and ASEAN countries,” said Mr. Liu Yongfu in his speech. He also commended the ASEAN countries on  poverty eradication success with the community-based conditional cash transfer programs and community-driven development projects.

The Forum is co-organized by the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development of China (LGOP) and the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development of Myanmar (MLFRD), and hosted by the International Poverty Reduction Center of China (IPRCC) and the Rural Development Division of MLFRD.

UNDP is supporting one of the hosts of the event, IPRCC, since 2005. The “China-ASEAN Forum,” the “Annual Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum” and the “Africa-China Conference” are the three key conferences co-organized by UNDP and IPRCC.

“China and the nations of ASEAN have made remarkable progress in human development, poverty reduction, and the improvement of the quality of basic social services,” said Helen Clark, UNDP Administrator, in a video message to the conference’s 130 participants.

"It is unlikely that Asia's past model of growth, heavily based on exports and manufacturing, will be sustainable indefinitely," added Clark.

The participants of the forum are sharing solutions to critical development issues and exploring new practices which can improve the South-South model of regional cooperation in poverty reduction between China and ASEAN countries.

The Forum lasts from August 7 to 8 August 2014. The forum participants include government officials, scholars, delegates from international organizations, civil society organizations and enterprises, and the media.

The speakers included Minister U Ohn Myint of MLFRD, Minister Liu Yongfu of LGOP, and H.E. Alicia Dela Rosa Bala, Deputy Secretary-General of the ASEAN Secretariat.

ASEAN-China Forum on Social Development and Poverty Reduction is an established initiative between China and ASEAN countries, focussing exclusively on poverty reduction. It intends to provide a platform for policy makers, scholars, researchers and development practitioners to share information and exchange experiences. This Forum is supported by the UNDP, ASEAN Secretariat, Asia Development Bank, Poverty Alleviation Office of Guangxi Province, China Center for International Economic and Technical Exchanges, ASEAN-China Center, and Radanar Ayar Rural Development Association for Rural Development in Myanmar.
