I am very pleased to greet all participants in the 8th ASEAN-China Forum on Social Development and Poverty Reduction. China and the nations of ASEAN have made remarkable progress in human development, poverty reduction, and the improvement of the quality of basic social services. While there is significant potential for this development progress to continue, there are also challenges we faced. For example, it is unlikely that Asia’s past model of growth, heavily based on exports and manufacturing, will be sustainable indefinitely.

Your Excellency, U Kyaw Hsan, distinguished colleagues, friends, guests, ladies and gentlemen, Mingalabar! It is a privilege to represent UNDP Myanmar as we mark the end of one of the longest projects that UNDP has ever supported and we do so on a successful and future-oriented note. The first 17 year chapter of the history of microfinance in Myanmar is over and it has made a significant contribution to poverty alleviation in Myanmar and the development of the country’s microfinance sector.
