9 December 2019, Nay Pyi Taw
– UNDP together with UNODC supported the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day on 9 December 2019. In parallel to the main event in Nay Pyi Taw, corresponding regional events were organized in all 14 State and Regions.

His Excellency the President U Win Myint participated in the event in Nay Pyi Taw and delivered opening remarks. In his speech, the president underlined that Myanmar’s Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP) links to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and that SDG 16 specifically encompasses anti-corruption measures. He iterated that “the Government understands that the problem of corruption […] has taken root and been thriving for many years is a major obstacle; that is why we have been making strenuous efforts continuously with strong political fervor to create a society free from corruption”.

ACC Chairman U Aung Kyi stressed the importance of addressing both the demand and the supply side of corruption and that the ACC in cooperation with UN agencies will support and assist the recently set up Corruption Prevention Units in union ministries.

UNDP Resident Representative a.i, Gordon Johnson, highlighted that UNDP’s anti-corruption work aligns with MSDP strategy 1.4 and mentioned that UNDP’s anti-corruption work is embedded in UNDP’s larger accountability programming stretching across all three branches of government.

After the premiere of a new anti-corruption video, which UNDP helped produce, the commemoration event ended cheerfully with students’ performances and award ceremonies for winning students.
