Youth in the Digital Transformation of Myanmar

Yangon, Myanmar – Ooredoo Myanmar and UNDP Myanmar will co-host the second edition of its collaboration - The Hackathon from 18-20 October in Yangon and Mandalay, in partnership with Impact Hub. The Hackathon 2019 recognizes the tremendous potential of Myanmar’s young population for developing practical solutions to everyday development challenges through digital innovation and entrepreneurship. This year, Myanmar’s youth, start-ups, and aspiring entrepreneurs are invited to compete and develop digital solutions under three themes: i) Rural Development; ii) Education; and iii) Climate Change.

The Hackathon 2019 is open to anyone who is interested in computer programming, design, communications, social welfare and loves to learn and build impactful solutions. Depending on the level of experience, participants will apply for either Junior Level or Advanced Level categories. 3 winning teams from each Level will be awarded with cash prizes and an invitation to an incubation programme supported by Ooredoo and UNDP.

We are keen to support Myanmar’s digital transformation and at the same time, we support the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). After the great success of last year’s Hackathon, we are excited to organize this year's Hackathon together with UNDP. We hope for innovative and impactful ideas, inspired by those of last year's winners” said Mr. Rajeev Sethi, CEO of Ooredoo Myanmar.

“The Hackathon is an innovative and exciting element of the UNDP-Ooredoo partnership in Myanmar. It aims to bring together the best and brightest minds in Myanmar and give them a platform to collaborate, explore and develop solutions for a better Myanmar. I am very happy that we are continuing this initiative in 2019 and look forward to engaging with the participants and seeing the ideas they will propose,” added Mr. Peter Batchelor, Resident Representative, UNDP.

The Hackathon is a special initiative of Ooredoo Myanmar and UNDP to promote and scale up digital innovation and entrepreneurship amongst the youth in Myanmar. It aims to provide a platform for Myanmar’s youth to showcase innovative ideas to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Myanmar through digital innovation.
